Dante Alighieri’s Inferno and the Structure of Hell

As was mentioned in the post about Biblical References to Satan, The Bible does not elaborate much on Hell; only that it is a “lake of fire” to which Lucifer was sent after he and one-third of God’s angels rebelled as punishment for his hubris. The structure of Hell, and the idea of sinners’ eternal punishment being ironically tailored to suit their sin, comes largely from Dante Alighieri’s Inferno.

Inferno was the first part of a trilogy entitled the Divine Comedy. The story begins on Good Friday in the year 1300; Dante is thirty-five years old, half of the biblical life expectancy of 70 (Psalms 89:10), and lost in a dark woods, where he is beset by beasts. He meets the spirit Virgil, who was sent to him by his lover Beatrice in Heaven. Virgil assures Dante he can lead him to Beatrice, but to do so he must pass through Hell, then Purgatory, before reaching Heaven. Inferno follows his trek through Hell; Purgatorio, the second book, follows him through Purgatory; and in Paradiso, Dante reunites with Beatrice, who leads him through the Nine Spheres of Heaven.

The Divine Comedy was a vehicle for the author Dante to articulate his dissent to certain politicians, who he relegated to eternal torture in Hell (even while they were alive and very much acquainted at the time of writing), and to advertise his self-appointed greatness compared to the greatest poets of the time, including the Roman poet Virgil. It was also an allegory representing the character Dante’s mental journey to understand God’s love; first through understanding Sin in Hell, then through understanding how sin corrupts God’s love in Purgatory, then by finally understanding his love in Heaven. It is a decidedly Christian piece; the primary moral theme being that not only is sin evil, but one ought not pity sinners.

The Structure of Hell

Dante’s Hell is shaped like a funnel that extends all the way to the center of the earth. It is situated underneath the city of Jerusalem, which is at the center of the northern hemisphere. Opposite Jerusalem, at the center of the southern hemisphere is the mountain of Purgatory. Lucifer is immobilized at the bottom of Hell, where he fell after the defeat in his rebellion against God.

This funnel is made of nine circles. The first circle is the widest and, progressively, the ninth circle is the smallest. This ninth circle surrounds Lucifer. Each circle is reserved to a different category of sinners:

Ante-Hell: This is a place where the souls of the damned fall at their death. From here they are brought by Charon into Hell through the river Acheron. Some souls, the Neutrals, remain here, because they never chose either good or evil.

Upper Hell: the Incontinent

1st circle: Limbo. Reserved for the souls of the just people who never knew Christ, and those (especially infants) who died without baptism and never committed a sin. Here Dante encounters the ancient philosophers and poets.

2nd circle: The Lustful. Dante talks to Francesca da Rimini, who tells him how she became involved in an adulterous affair with Paolo, her brother in law. Landscape: a violent storm which tosses around the souls. Minos guards this circle.

3rd circle: The Gluttonous. Dante talks to Ciacco, a Florentine, who used to be a parasite, as he was going from people to people, gossiping on everyone. Ciacco gives Dante the first prophecy of his future exile. Landscape: heavy steady rain. Three-headed Cerberus is the guardian.

4th circle: The Avaricious and Prodigals. No relevant character is found here. These souls, mostly clerics, go opposite direction, bumping into each other as they push big rocks. The guardian is Pluto, who makes no sense when he talks.

5th circle: The Wrathful and Sullen. These souls are submerged into the river Styx, which surrounds the city of Dis. The wrathful emerge from the dirty waters while the sullen are completely submerged. Phlegyas will take Dante and Virgil across this river in his boat. Here Dante talks to Filippo Argenti, an old acquaintance for whom he has no pity.

Lower Hell: Violence and Fraud

The city of Dis: High walls with closed doors guarded by devils, helped by the Furies and the Medusa. They try to stop Dante, but a divine messenger forces them to open the door.

6th circle: The Heretics. Dante enters the city and sees a huge cemetery filled with open tombs with fire coming out of them. One of the tombs contains the souls of the Epicureans. Dante talks to Farinata degli Uberti and Cavalcante de’ Cavalcanti, father of Guido, the poet, and Dante’s friend.

7th circle: The Violent. Introduced by the Minotaur, this circle is divided into three rings:

1) Violent Against their Neighbors (tyrants and murderers). These souls are plunged into a river of boiling blood: the river Phlegethon. They are watched over by the Centaurs.

2) Violent against Themselves (suicides). It is an unnatural forest with leafless trees. These trees are the souls of the suicides. Dante talks to Pier delle Vigne, personal secretary of Frederick II. The trees have no leaves because the Harpies keep plucking them as they sprout. Among the trees Dante sees the souls of the squanderers, chased by bitches.

3) Violent against God and Nature. Blasphemers, Sodomites, etc. Virgil talks to Capaneus, king of ancient Crete, stricken by Zeus’s bolt for his rebellion. Then Dante talks to his teacher Brunetto Latini, and later he sees three Florentines, at the edge of the circle.

The river Phlegethon cascades into the eight circle, and there is no path to go down. Dante and Virgil are carried down by a three-nature monster, Geryon.

8th circle: Fraud. It is called Malebolge because it is divided into ten bolge (ditches).

1) Panders and Seducers. These souls are scourged by horned demons. Dante talks to Venedico Caccianemico.

2) Flatterers. These souls are immersed in excrements. Dante talks to Alessio Interminei and the ancient Thais.

3) Simonists. They are set heads down into holes in the rock with flames burning on their feet. Dante talks to Pope Nicholas III, who mistakes him for Boniface VII.

4) Diviners, Astrologers and Magicians. Their heads are turned backwards, so they have to walk backwards. Virgil talks to some ancient people: Amphiaraus, Tiresias, Manto and Eurypylus. Among the modern: Michael Scot.

5) Barrators. They are plunged into boiling pitch and guarded by ten sneaky demons (Malebranche) led by Malacoda (evil tail). Ciampolo of Navarra (a sinner) succeeds in cheating the demons in a hellish context.

6) Hypocrites. These souls, mostly monks of the Jovial order, walk slowly, clothed in heavy caps of lead. Dante talks to two of them from Bologna.

7) Thieves. These souls keep changing into snakes. Dante recognizes (among others) Vanni Fucci, who predicts the defeat of Dante’s party, the Whites, and his exile from the city.

8) Fraudulent Counselors. These souls slide away in the ditch as flames. First Virgil talks to Ulysses, the Homeric hero, then Dante talks to Guido da Montefeltro, a turned saint sneaky character.

9) Sowers of Discord and Schism. These souls are physically torn apart. Dante talks to a few, among them Bertram de Bornio, who holds his severed head like a lamp as he walks along.

10) Falsifiers of metals, persons, coins and words. It is like a huge hospital with people with all kinds of deformities. As in the previous ditch, this too is crowded. Master Adam is the most colorful of them.

9th circle: Treachery. It is divided into four sections. The sinners are in a frozen lake, Cocytus. This circle is surrounded by the Giants. One of them, Antaeus, takes Dante and Virgil and puts them down into the ice.

1) Caina: Traitors to Kin. These are immersed in the ice with head down. Dante talks to Carmiscione de’ Pazzi.

2) Antenora: Traitors to Homeland. Dante sees one who keeps biting on another’s head. He is Count Ugolino who is gnawing the Archbishop Ruggeri’s head. He tells Dante the account of his death.

3) Ptolomea: Traitors to Guests. They are head up in the ice, which is freezing their eyes. Dante talks to Fra Alberigo, who is there while his body is still alive, for having killed his guests as he invited them for dinner.

4) Giudecca: Traitors to Benefactors. These sinners are completely immersed into the ice.

The ice of the 9th circled is kept frozen by Lucifer’s six flapping wings. Lucifer has three faces, with three mouths, each chewing on a sinner: Judas is in the middle mouth with his head inside, Brutus and Cassius are in the side mouths, with their heads hanging out.

Satanism on Women

It is the general Satanic perspective that gender equality is an essential part of their apocalyptic vision of utopia. In this future, absent of society, culture, and all of the expectations levied against all demographics as a necessary biproduct, everyone has the equal opportunity to fight for their right to live – women in particular, without whom the human race would not survive.

Major Satanic preliminaries have stepped forward to cite strong opinions on issues of interest to women.

The Marquis de Sade on Women

The Marquis de Sade was the first Satanic preliminary to do so, and his opinion was a remarkably favorable one for the time period. Raised in Revolutionary France and born a noble aristocrat, Sade nonetheless held a heartfelt sympathy for the plight of all disenfranchised groups.

“Never,” he proclaimed, “may an act of possession be exercised upon a free being; the exclusive possession of a woman is no less unjust than the possession of slaves; all men are born free, all have equal rights: never should we lose sight of those principles; according to which never may there be granted to one sex the legitimate right to lay monopolizing hands upon the other, and never may one of the sexes, or classes, arbitrarily possess the other.”

His novel Juliette, published between 1797-1801, was a sequel to the novelette Justine. Juliette, who grew up alongside her sister Justine in a convent, is seduced into amoralism at the age of thirteen. The novel follows her libertine life up to age thirty, in which she meets other like-minded criminals: Clairwil, whose passion is murdering young men, and Saint-Fond, a fifty-year-old millionaire who (on top of committing incest, murder, and the torture of young women) conspires to incite a famine that will wipe out half of France. Despite the wickedness and reckless abandon with which Juliette leads her life, she is granted the happy ending so cruelly denied her virtuous sibling.

“Behold, my love, behold all that I simultaneously do: scandal, seduction, bad example, incest, adultery, sodomy! Oh, Satan! one and unique God of my soul, inspire thou in me something yet more, present further perversions to my smoking heart, and then shalt thou see how I shall plunge myself into them all!”

Juliette represents Sade’s perfect libertine woman. She embraces wickedness, is an insatiable lover, worships Satan, and her sole purpose in life is “to enjoy oneself at no matter whose expense.”

Sade’s general philosophy was laid out in two of his major works: La Philosophie dans le boudoir (in English: Philosophy in the Bedroom) and Les 120 Journées de Sodome (in English: The 120 Days of Sodom).

La Philosophie, written in 1795, was both a socio-political drama and a work of erotic fiction. In the introduction of his sordid tale, involving the deflowering and corruption of an innocent teenage girl and eventually culminating in the rape of her pious Christian mother, Sade offers a stirring appeal to his female readers in particular:

Lewd women, let the voluptuous Saint-Ange be your model; after her example, be heedless of all that contradicts pleasure’s divine laws, by which all her life she was enchained.

You young maidens, too long constrained by a fanciful Virtue’s absurd and dangerous bonds and by those of a disgusting religion, imitate the fiery Eugenie; be as quick as she is to destroy, to spurn all those ridiculous precepts inculcated in you by imbecile parents.

Dolmance, the homosexual nobleman leading the tutelage of this maiden (and in many ways Sade’s author avatar), encourages her to discard confining societal expectations heaped upon her:

“Ah, Eugenie, have done with virtues! Among the sacrifices that can be made to those counterfeit divinities, is there one worth an instant of the pleasures one tastes in outraging them?”

For Eugenie, the maiden in question, her thorough deflowering – in stark contrast to other virginal heroines prominent in erotic fiction of the time – is a cause for joy. She proclaims:

“Here am I: at one stroke incestuous, adulteress, sodomite, and all that in a girl who only lost her maidenhead today! What progress, my friends… with what rapidity I advance along the thorny road of vice!”

As for the Madame de Saint-Ange, the older female libertine and accomplice to Eugenie’s corruption, she has radically liberal perspectives on marital fidelity:

“My libertinage in no wise affects my husband … my husband is no more sullied by my debauches than I might be by his. I might fuck with the whole wide world without wounding him in the slightest.”

The Mme is also of Eugenie’s opinion related to a woman’s right to pleasure:

“Woman’s destiny is to be wanton, like the bitch, the she-wolf; she must belong to all who claim her.”

As he stated in the introduction, it was Sade’s hope that female readers of La Philosophie would embrace the example set by his female characters therein and embrace their own agency, particularly within the sexual realm.

Les Journées, written between 1785-1789, was Sade’s self-appointed magnum opus. As he was writing it from Bastille, it is alleged he shouted from the window of his cell to the streets below, inciting a small riot. Two days later, he was transferred to the insane asylum at Charenton. In the process, he lost his original manuscript of Les Journées. The more devastating blow came on July 14th, when the storming of Bastille occurred. Had he bitten his tongue, he may have been among the escapees.

In it, four wealthy noble libertines steal away for four months to the inaccessible castle in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, France, with a harem of 46 victims – mostly young male and female teenagers – where they engage four female brothel keepers to tell the stories of their lives and adventures. The stories they tell are the inspiration for tortures meted out upon the harem members, which grows in intensity with each passing day and eventually results in their slaughter. However, their torture is not always physical. Often the stories profile other extreme fetishes, including coprophilia, pedophilia, blasphemy against the Catholic church and mass group sex.

The stories are often the impetus for the primary characters to discuss their libertine philosophies. Among the topics explored include beauty:

“Beauty belongs to the sphere of the simple, the ordinary, whilst ugliness is something extraordinary, and there is no question but that every ardent imagination prefers in lubricity, the extraordinary to the commonplace.”


“Do not breed. Nothing gives less pleasure than childbearing. Pregnancies are damaging to health, spoil the figure, wither the charms, and it’s the cloud of uncertainty forever hanging over these events that darkens a husband’s mood.”

And even abortion:

“Dread not infanticide; the crime is imaginary: we are always mistress of what we carry in our womb, and we do no more harm in destroying this kind of matter than in evacuating another, by medicines, when we feel the need.”

These sentiments reflect those expressed by modern feminist critics, who are dissatisfied with the standard of beauty imposed upon them, are questioning the expectation that they occupy the traditional homekeeper role within their private lives, and are most assuredly pro-choice.

Simone de Beauvoir, a prominent French feminist literary critique, published her essay Must We Burn Sade? in the 1951 issue of Les tempes modernes. The answer is, ultimately, no. Beauvoir finds useful wisdom in Sade’s libertine approach to philosophy: “Not only does Sade … anticipate what has been called the ‘pansexuality’ of Freud, but also he makes eroticism the mainspring of human behaviour. In addition, he asserts that sexuality is charged with a significance that goes beyond it. Libido is everywhere, and it is always far more than itself.” If ever there was a feminist stamp of approval, it would seem Sade has earned it.

Anton Szandor LaVey on Women

Anton Szandor Lavey first published The Satanic Witch (originally The Compleat Witch) in 1971. This work was written in particular for his female followers.

Though The Satanic Witch reaffirms many standards modern feminists reject, like the obligation of women to tailor their appearance to suit the attraction (or repellant) of men, it insists these are strengths a savvy witch can exploit to better manipulate her ends. This is, in fact, the intention of the entire book.


To this end, LaVey provided his “Personality Synthesizer” for women to categorize themselves based on four archetypes he provided. These archetypes accompanied the four cardinal directions, which were juxtaposed on top of the numbers on a clock. Female witches were encouraged to discover their “type” by matching it to a number on the clock.

Although in this sense the Satanic Witch reads like a self-help book written by a man instructing women how to be sexy, LaVey clarifies that his intention is not to pick up men, “but to produce within yourself an accelerated charge of self-confidence.” Channeling Sade before him, LaVey was imploring women to take control of their sexual agency not just as a form of rebellion against conventional interpretations of virtue, but as an expression of herself as a metaphysical creation-being.

Despite LaVey’s lifelong insistence that there was a quantifiable difference between men and women that ran as deeply as his metaphysics, no doubt a holdover from the neo-pagan Wiccan tradition of revering the divine feminine and the divine masculine in separate components – the Triple Goddess and the Horned God – he did not allow this dissimilarity to impede women’s voice within his Church. His daughter, Zeena LaVey, was the public face of the Church as its High Priestess during the mid to late 80’s, and the succession of women in his life – Diane Hegarty and Blanche Barton – went on to occupy the seat as well. Female magi within the church today have the same opportunities afforded to them for upward advancement within the hierarchy as their male counterparts.

In The Secret Life of a Satanist: The Authorized Biography of Anton LaVey, written by Blanche Barton in 1990, LaVey remarks upon the heavy influence the women in his life had upon the publication of the Satanic Bible.

“The difference between Marilyn’s and Jayne’s approach to intellectual pursuits is that Marilyn carried big heavy books around and hung out with brainy people to absorb their intellect, while Jayne really had a thirst for knowledge. Jayne was very proud of the fact that if she like something enough she would commit it to memory. At that time, The Satanic Bible was still in monograph form, and Jayne had pored over those pages until she knew most of it by heart…Marilyn gave me a copy of Stendhal’s On Love, and I still have a copy of Walter Benton’s This is My Beloved, which we bought together on Sunset Boulevard. Marilyn turned me on to it—wanted me to read it and write something in it for her. I got as far as writing her name in it, but I ended up with the book. It meant a lot to me during a particularly dark period in my life after I left L.A. Jayne kept insisting I read The Story of O and I, Jan Cremer. She gave me a dog-eared copy of each. It seems a distinctly feminine trait to want to share books with people they care deeply about.”

The Satanic perspective on women is a favorable one; as Anton Long wrote in the Black Book of Satan, “Nothing is beautiful except man: but most beautiful of all is woman.”

The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth and the Nine Satanic Sins

Penned in 1967 by Anton Szandor LaVey, the Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth outline the Church of Satan’s basic ethical code.

1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.

2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.

3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.

4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.

5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.

6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.

7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.

8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.

9. Do not harm little children.

10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.

11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

In 1987, he followed this with a list of the Nine Satanic Sins.

1. Stupidity—The top of the list for Satanic Sins. The Cardinal Sin of Satanism. It’s too bad that stupidity isn’t painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity. It depends on people going along with whatever they are told. The media promotes a cultivated stupidity as a posture that is not only acceptable but laudable. Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.

2. Pretentiousness—Empty posturing can be most irritating and isn’t applying the cardinal rules of Lesser Magic. On equal footing with stupidity for what keeps the money in circulation these days. Everyone’s made to feel like a big shot, whether they can come up with the goods or not.

3. Solipsism—Can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won’t. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of “Do unto others as they do unto you.” It’s work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.

4. Self-deceit—It’s in the “Nine Satanic Statements” but deserves to be repeated here. Another cardinal sin. We must not pay homage to any of the sacred cows presented to us, including the roles we are expected to play ourselves. The only time self-deceit should be entered into is when it’s fun, and with awareness. But then, it’s not self-deceit!

5. Herd Conformity—That’s obvious from a Satanic stance. It’s all right to conform to a person’s wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.

6. Lack of Perspective—Again, this one can lead to a lot of pain for a Satanist. You must never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. That is an important key to both Lesser and Greater Magic. See the patterns and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraints—know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world.

7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies—Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it’s something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.

8. Counterproductive Pride—That first word is important. Pride is great up to the point you begin to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The rule of Satanism is: if it works for you, great. When it stops working for you, when you’ve painted yourself into a corner and the only way out is to say, I’m sorry, I made a mistake, I wish we could compromise somehow, then do it.

9. Lack of Aesthetics—This is the physical application of the Balance Factor. Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off classical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It’s not what’s supposed to be pleasing—it’s what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one’s own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.

Luciferianism: Theistic, Arcadic, and Nontheistic

Not all Satanists revere the carnal aspects of Satan. Some revere Him as a bringer of Knowledge, Truth and Light, akin to the Prometheus legend of the Greeks. These people are called Luciferians.

Unlike conventional Satanists, many of whom embrace less than virtuous behavior in an attempt to exalt the physical body, Luciferians strive to be beacons of integrity, honesty and wisdom. They seek to become more like Lucifer through left-hand path occultism – Thelema and Kaballah in particular – and therefore, gnosis. They believe Lucifer was wrongly cast from the heavens for blessing humanity with knowledge and have a sympathetic interpretation of the events leading to His legendary fall from grace.

Theistic Luciferians revere Lucifer as an actual deity and offer Him praise through elaborate ceremonial magick. Most are solitary. The Neo-Luciferian Church, founded in 2005 by Danish occultist Bjarne Pedersen and American artist, author and philosopher Michael Paul Bertiaux, maintains an active membership in Denmark and Sweden.

Arcadic Luciferianism, named after the ancient mythological society of Arcadia, marries secular humanism with neo-pagan culture. Though they participate in occult activities, such as revering the sabbaths listed in the Wiccan Wheel of the Year, they consider these activities purely symbolic of human ideals and otherwise distance themselves from magical work. The ambition of Arcadic Luciferians is to return to a state of communion with nature as described in the legend of Arcadia.

Sometimes described as “agnosticism for Luciferians,” the third sub-group within this category are called Nontheistic Luciferians.

The Nineteen Enochian Keys

The Enochian Keys, listed in the Satanic Bible in the Book of Leviathan, can be best described as mantras intended to incite a certain atmospheric vibration, much like the bija mantras – Sanskrit syllables chanted during meditation to align bodily chakras. “I have presented my translation of the following calls with an archaic but Satanically correct unvarnishing of the translation employed by the Order of the Golden Dawn in the late Nineteenth Century. In Enochian the meaning of the words, combined with the quality of the words, unite to create a pattern of sound which can cause tremendous reaction in the atmosphere. The barbaric tonal qualities of this language give it a truly magical effect which cannot be described.”

They are invoked at step twelve in the process of performing a Satanic ritual outlined in the Book of Belial.

They are, as follows:

The First Key:

The first Enochian Key represents an initial proclamation from Satan, stating the inception of the laws of temporal theologies and of the lasting power which resides in those bold enough to recognize earthly beginnings and absolutes.

Performing a LaVeyan Satanic Ritual

In the Book of Belial, it provides a thirteen-step instruction guide for how the rituals ought to be performed.

1. Dress for ritual.
2. Assemble devices for ritual; light candles and shut out all outside light sources; place parchments to right and left of the altar as indicated.
3. If a woman is used as the altar she now takes her position – head pointing south, feet pointing north.
4. Purification of the air by ringing of the bell.

Leave the area of the altar and remove yourself to that place, either in the same room or without, that will be most conducive to the working of the respective ritual. Then, fashion whatever imagery you possibly can that will parallel in as exact a way possible the situation towards which you strive. Remember, you have five senses to utilize, so do not feel you must limit your imagery to one. Here are devices that may be employed (either alone, or in any combination):

a. graphic imagery such as drawings, paintings, etc.
b. written imagery such as stories, plays, descriptions of desires and eventual outcome of same.
c. acting out the desire in tableau or playet, either as yourself or portraying the role of the object of your desire (transference), using any devices necessary to intensify imagery.
d. any odors relative to the desired person or situation.
e. any sounds or background noises conducive to a strong image.

Intense sexual feeling should accompany this step of the ritual, and after sufficient imagery is obtained, as strong an orgasm as is possible should serve as climax to this step. This climax should be attained using any masturbatory or auto-erotic means necessary. After orgasm is obtained, return to the location of the altar and proceed with step 11.

B. To Insure Help Or Success For One Who Has Your Sympathy Or Compassion (Including Yourself)

Remain in close proximity of the altar and with as vivid a mental image as possible of the person you wish to help (or intense self-pity), state your desire in your own terms. Should your emotions be genuine enough, they will be accompanied the shedding of tears, which should be allowed to flow without restraint. After this exercise in sentiment is completed, proceed to step 11.

C. To Cause The Destruction Of An Enemy

Remain in the area of the altar unless imagery is more easily obtained in another spot, such as in the vicinity of the victim. Producing the image of the victim, proceed to inflict the destruction upon the effigy in the manner of your choice. This can be done in the following ways:

f. the sticking of pins or nails into a doll representing your victim; the doll may be cloth, wax, wood, vegetable matter, etc.
g. the creation of graphic imagery depicting the method of your victim’s destruction; drawings, paintings, etc.
h. the creation of a vivid literary description of your victim’s ultimate end.
i. a detailed soliloquy directed at the intended victim, describing his torments and annihilation.
j. mutilation, injury, infliction of pain or illness by proxy using any other means or devices desired.

Intense, calculated hatred and disdain should accompany this step of the ceremony, and no attempt should be made to stop this step until the expended energy results in a state of relative exhaustion on the part of the magician. When the exhastion ensues, proceed to step 11.

11a. If requests are written, they are now read aloud by the priest and then burned in the flames of the appropriate candle. “Shemhamforash!” and “Hail Satan!” is said after each request.
11b. If requests are given verbally, participants (one at a time) now tell them to the priest. He then repeats in his own words (those which are most emotionally stimulating to him) the request. “Shemhamforash!” and “Hail Satan!” is said after each request.
12. Appropriate Enochian Key is now read by the priest, as evidence of the participants’ allegiance to the Powers of Darkness.
13. Ringing of the bell as pollutionary, and then the words “SO IT IS DONE” are spoken by the priest.


Next, the Devices Used in a Satanic Ritual are listed. They are, as follows:

Clothing – Males should wear black, hooded robes. Young females should wear sexually suggestive clothing; women past menopause should wear all-black clothing in the fashion of a crone.

Altar – A nude woman should be used as the altar. If her nudity is impractical, her clothing should be minimalist at best. She is to lay flat on an elevated plane with her head pointing south and her feet pointing north.


Symbol of Baphomet

Symbol of Baphomet – Representing Satan. To be placed on the wall above the altar.

Candles – Representing Lucifer, Bearer of Light. Black candles are used in power and success rituals; white candles are used in destruction rituals.

Bell – To be stricken twice, signaling the beginning and end of the ritual. Its tonal quality, preferably, should be loud and penetrating, as opposed to a gentle ‘tink.’

Chalice – Represents the “Chalice of Ecstacy.” Preferably made of silver, but may also be composed of metal, wood, or clay. Chalices MUST not be made of gold.

Elixir – Served in the chalice during rituals. Though traditionally it is red wine, it can be “whatever drink is most stimulating and pleasing to the palate.”

Sword – Similar to an athame in Wiccan practice, the Sword of Aggression is wielded by the priest to indicate the Symbol of Baphomet during rituals. It is also used extensively when calling forth the Four Crown Princes of Hell. Magicians may substitute a long knife or a staff for a sword if they like.

Phallus – A phallic symbol is required for some group rituals. It is held in both hands by one of the priests’ assistants and shaken in the four cardinal directions “for the benediction of the house.” In the tradition of the pagan ancients, LaVeyan Satanism has adopted the symbol of the phallus as a luck charm.

Gong – To be stricken once after the gathered company have recited the phrase “Hail Satan!”

Parchment – For writing communications with demonic spirits. The pieces of parchment are “consumed by the candle flame and sent into the ether.”

In the Book of Leviathan, the invocations alluded to in the instructions are listed. All of the invocations refer to the Infernal Names. They are as follows:

Send forth that messenger of voluptuous delights, and let these obscene vistas of my dark desires take form in future deeds and doings. From the sixth tower of Satan there shall come a sign which joineth with those saltes within, and as such will move the body of the flesh of my summoning. I have gathered forth my symbols and prepare my garnishings of the is to be, and the image of my creation lurketh as a seething basilisk awaiting his release. Behold! The mighty voices of my vengeance smash the stillness of the air and stand as monoliths of wrath upon a plain of writhing serpents. I am become as a monstrous machine of annihilation to the festering fragments of the body of he (she) who would detain me.

It repenteth me not that my summons doth ride upon the blasting winds which multiply the sting of my bitterness; And great black slimy shapes shall rise from brackish pits and vomit forth their pustulence into his (her) puny brain.

I call upon the messengers of doom to slash with grim delight this victim I hath chosen. Silent is that voiceless bird that feeds upon the brain-pulp of him (her) who hath tormented me, and the agony of the is to be shall sustain itself in shrieks of pain, only to serve as signals of warning to those who would resent my being.

Oh come forth in the name of Abaddon and destroy him (her) whose name I giveth as a sign.

With the anger of anguish and the wrath of the stifled, I pour forth my voices, wrapped in rolling thunder, that you may hear!

Oh great lurkers in the darkness, oh guardians of the way, oh minions of the might of Thoth! Move and appear! Present yourselves to us in your benign power, in behalf of one who believes and is stricken with torment.

Isolate him (her) in the bulwark of your protection, for he (she) is undeserving of anguish and desires it not.

Let that which bears against him (her) be rendered powerless and devoid of substance.

Succor him (her) through fire and water, earth and air, to regain what he (she) has lost.

Strengthen with fire the marrow of our friend and companion, our comrade of the Left-Hand Path.

Through the power of Satan let the earth and its pleasures re-enter his (her) being.

Allow his (her) vital saltes to flow unhampered, that he (she) may savor the carnal nectars of his (her) future desires.
