Ahl-i Haqq and the Kurdish Devil-Worshipers

hoodedfiguretome

“I had a Persian friend in Tehran, an avant-garde playwright and member of a sect called Ahl-i-Haqq (‘People of Truth’ or ‘People of God,’ ‘haqq’ being a divine name) who traveled to the valley of the Satan-worshippers in the mid-1970s.

A Kurdish sect influenced by extreme Shi’ism, Sufism, Iranian gnosticism, and native shamanism, the Ahl-i Haqq consists of a number of subgroups, most of whose adherents are non-literate peasants.  With no Sacred Book to unite these subgroups in their remote valleys, they often developed widely divergent versions of the Ahl-i Haqq myths and teachings.  One subgroup venerates Satan.  I know of almost nothing written about the Shaitan-parastiyyan or ‘Satan-worshippers,’ and not much has been done of the Ahl-i Haqq in general.  Many secrets remain unknown to outsiders.

The Tehran Ahl-i Haqq were lead by a Kurdish pir, Ustad Nur Ali Elahi, a great musician and teacher.  Some old-fashioned Ahl-i Haqq considered him a renegade because he revealed secrets to outsiders, i.e., non-Kurds, and even published them in books.  When my friend asked him about the Satan-worshippers, however, Elahi gently rebuffed him:  ‘Don’t worry about Shaitan; worry about the shay-ye tan‘ (literally ‘the thing of the body,’ the carnal soul, the separative ego).  My friend ignored this doubtless good advice, and with his brother set off for Kurdestan in their Land Rover.

… At last they were there – and their little caravan was met by a dozen or so long-tressed tribesmen in traditional Kurdish costume: baggy pants, turbans, guns.  Scowling fiercely they greeted the brothers thus:

‘Ya! Zat-i Shaitan!’ – Hail, O Essence of Satan!

Compared with the thrill of that moment the rest of the trip proved anticlimactic.  The villagers had long ago given up banditry (they said), and naturally there was no evidence of nocturnal perversion.  Abjectly poor, they possessed nothing so exotic as a pig or a flagon of wine.  As for their religion, they professed to know virtually nothing about it; either they were protecting secrets from outsiders, or they had really forgotten almost everything.  Considerable knowledge can be lost in a nonliterate society devoted to secrecy and cut off from the world; leaders can die without passing on certain details, and whole villages, stricken by disease or drought, can perish or disperse and vanish.

No doubt the devil worshippers knew more than they told my friends, but in the end they seemed no more sinister than any other group of mountain Kurds, a generally noble-hearted and hospitable people when not engaged in blood-feuds, vendettas, or guerrila warfare.

What, however, is the ‘essence of Satan’?  In a book devoted to the teachings of Ustad Elahi, Satan is said to exist, bound and powerless, a mere fallen angel.  Moreover, ‘apart from man, evil does not exist in nature … the ‘devil’ is simply the way that the domineering self … expresses itself in us. … The story of Satan was over long ago; it only concerns God and him.’  In other words, the Koranic version of the Temptation and Fall (very similar to that of Genesis) is literally true, but irrelevant.  The Satan from whom all believers ‘take refuge’ in prayer is, in truth, a projection of their own spiritual imperfection.  Needless to say, this is not orthodox Islam or the opinion of most Sufis; it is, however, a very interesting resolution to a very thorny theological problem.”

The Church of Satan and Its Opposition to Other Satanic Groups

churchofsatanadherents

“In response to the increasing number of Satanic organizations, Peter Gilmore, the High Priest of the COS, has said that there is no Satanic community beyond the individuals that make up the Church of Satan. Regarding the increasing prevalence of theistic and other forms of Satanism divergent from COS ideology, their official stance is clear. To quote the FAQ section of the Church of Satan website, under “What is theistic Satanism?” it states,

“There is no such thing. People who believe in some Devilish supernatural being and worship him are Devil-worshippers, not Satanists. Anton LaVey was the first to define Satanism as a philosophy, and it is an atheist perspective. “Theistic Satanism” is an oxymoronic term and thus absurd.”

It is easy to attribute the Church of Satan’s rejection of all theistic Satanists to a desire to protect themselves from accusations of ritual abuse or general malfeasance. Considering the Satanic Panic is long behind us, however, a better explanation is one that entails nearly every established religious organization when new players enter the field. In an attempt to distinguish themselves from other forms of Satanism and assert themselves as the only validly operating Satanic organization, the Church of Satan has gone from actively constructing themselves as a social and religious “other” to a culturally established, mainstream religious institution that is not like those other “Devil-worshippers”. Such was the case among the mainstream Protestant churches when Christian Science, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormonism started gaining popularity. By saying theistic Satanists are not “real Satanists”, the Church of Satan is creating a distinctly Satanic religious identity not in opposition to American society, but in opposition to those “proximate others” who are too ideologically close for comfort, which might threaten their position in America’s religious landscape.”

The (Real) Cult of Cthulhu

evecthulhu

The Cult of Cthulhu is a legally-recognized religion in the United States. It was established in 2008 by High Priest Venger Satanis (also known as Darrick Dishaw). In this excerpt from the Cult of Cthulhu Bible, Satanis explains the origins of his religious beliefs:

“The Cult of Cthulhu shall never die. Its untenable spirit, unearthly and ichorous, is spreading far and wide through the Matrix-esque reality program that we are immersed in. As you read these words, try to wake up from the illusions surrounding you.

… Cthulhu Cult is the integration of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, Satanism, Chaos Magic, the Fourth Way, and other Left Hand Path traditions. It is also the fruition of my special plan: to see this world’s flaws, to understand why they exist, and then finally… to overcome them!

Years ago, I knew that humanity was on the wrong track, and this horrid green tome corrects the mistake of man… before us rushes a new flood of reason. When the Old Ones return, this world shall drown before Their might. The ordinary, everyday reality we believe in does not exist. Many human beings already sense this truth, but only the most blasphemous of Black Magicians can use it to their advantage. Cthulhu Cult reveals this loathsome knowledge to any and all who wish to absorb our cryptic, blasphemous truth.”

New Branch of Satanism – Agnostic Satanism

For many years, I’ve wanted to make a new branch of Satanism and with the help of many people, friends, and Satanic brothers and sisters, I have created the grey area of Satanism, or however you want to interpret it yourself. I present, Agnostic Satanism:

Key Points

Agnostic Satanists do not have proof or the right to prove or disprove other beliefs.
Agnostic Satanists may live by any satanic belief chosen by the individual, not by the masses of opinion.
Agnostic Satanists may combine practices, magick, rituals, prayers, beliefs, views, etc. from all and any satanic beliefs to fit their personal needs.
Agnostic Satanists must live by some form or another of Satanism, whether it be an established or personally created belief, otherwise they have no part in ‘Agnostic Satanism’ as the ‘Satanism’ would be an absent attribute.
Agnostic Satanism is a grey area Satanism branch – neither believes nor feels atheistic towards the matter.

Because there is no substantial proof to prove or disprove of a deity to be placed into this branch, one may create their own laws and rules to live by or modify any existing ones in already established branches.

The branch of Agnostic Satanism is simply an idea, a basis for those who feel they belong in it. Thus by applying individual beliefs, points, and laws, sub-branches can be created and built upon and taken in any direction as long as it remains under the universal agreement points of Agnostic Satanism, otherwise, it becomes its own branch or belief entirely.

In order for a sub-branch to be recognised, it must have either substantial beliefs that differ from the parent branch added but keeps the beliefs of the parent branch intact, or changes the beliefs of the parent branch, yet keeps the mandatory or important key points.

Agnostic Satanists still have the right to perform any meditation, magick, or ritual despite what individual and personal reasoning may be behind it.

Because Agnostic Satanists are neither Theistic or Atheistic, it may be wise to use psychology in the journey as substitution for spirituality. Such as coloured candles, colour can affect the brain in many different ways.

As new sub-branches are established, they may create new levels within the ‘Agnostic Grey (see below)’. The closer a sub-branch is to ‘Atheistic Black’, the more dramatic, mysterious, and concealing it becomes while adopting some Atheistic opinions. The closer a sub-branch is to ‘Theistic White’, the more illuminating, enlightening, and lively it becomes while adopting some Theistic opinions.

Colour Scale of Satanism and Colour Meanings

Theistic White – Comfort; peace and calm. Satan bringing enlightenment.
Agnostic Grey – Detached; no choice has been made; fence-sitter.
Atheistic Black – Concealing emotion, not putting out feelings and opinions when not wanted.

For those wanting to create sub-branches, please read:

Satanism is not a branch of another religion, Satanism is its own religion. Think of it as a tree, Satanism was the seed and grew a trunk, from there a tree must grow branches, and this is where all the different forms of Satanism come in. All these branches have different beliefs from each other but are still connected to the same tree. Now, on every individual branch comes the leaves: these are the sub-branches. These leaves may look a little different from each other and all grow individually, but they are all still connected to the same branch. These leaves must keep the basic idea of what branch they are connected to, if one leaf were to abandon this branch and start to take on its very own beliefs and belief systems, it would no longer be part of the branch and fall off.

Thank you all for reading and considering this idea, I will be adding more key points and ideas as they come to mind after more research and study.”

Satan’s Frontlines

Anarcho-Satanism

anarchobaphomet

“Satan doesn’t actually exist outside the human imagination- just like God, Satan is not a conscious external, independent being, but is the internal personification of a moral code- a construct of our minds to provide character and narrative to a common morality.

Christianity, Judaism and Islam are institutions which find power in dictating human morality, regardless of the real-life consequences and without purpose other than increased power and influence. Anarcho-Satanism promotes empowering the individual through the individual’s creative practice of moral judgment, and examining the evident consequences in detail for the purpose of gradual improvements to the overall quality of life. Anarcho-Satanists seek to reclaim the right of moral judgment from God, and entitle the communities and individuals with the self-confidence to decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong. The God of the monotheistic western religions is evil disguised as good, while Satan is good disguised as evil. As times change and human life evolves, this historic inversion of morality is slowly being corrected.

For hundreds and thousands of years, crusades, inquisitions, witch hunts, jihads, imperial colonization, slavery, and all other manner of organized cruelties have been carried out in the name of God. The cover of God provides the justification for the weak-minded and weak-willed to commit the worst atrocities, thinking that they will be forgiven by God rewarded in an afterlife for their mindless devotion.

When Christians Jews and Muslims are no longer able to create an illusion of eternal suffering for those who deny their God, they are no longer able to justify worship of their God as a path to salvation, as there is then nothing to be saved from, except the world which the influence of God has warped and twisted from an ancient paradise into a modern hell on earth.

Christianity, Judaism and Islam would have us believe that God is omnipotent; the source of existence and a benevolent entity, but to be all-powerful and to still allow atrocities to occur could only demonstrate the unjust cruelty of the source of these atrocities. If God had not wanted humans to suffer from rape, murder, disease, starvation, poverty, natural disasters, war, terrorism, torture and genocide, why would God create these conditions? Why would an all-powerful, omnipotent God allow such catastrophes to continually plague humanity? If it is part of God’s plan, then we as individuals must find the inner strength of our ability to reason and rightfully judge the plan as horribly flawed, or as the lack of any plan.

Anarcho-Satanism is an anti-theist philosophy that Christianity, Judaism and Islam have caused much more harm to humanity than good, that the harm caused by the major monotheistic religions has materially profited an elite few- mostly Governments, Corporations and Clergy, who insulate their ill-gotten wealth with social hierarchy and stratification, enforced by militarized police. An opposing view of common morality is the next step in the evolution of humanity, where all can find equality through growing beyond the presumption of divinely-imposed subordination and inferiority.

Anarcho-Satanism worships life on earth instead of worshiping God and the empty promises and threats of an afterlife. Anarcho-Satanism seeks to empower the community through empowering the individuals within it, instead of surrendering the glory of free will to God. Anarcho-Satanism seeks to restore the interconnected balance of the natural order and destroy the hierarchical, elitist divine order. Anarcho-Satanists are liberated intellectuals with vast capacities for empathic concern, while the Christians Jews and Muslims are psychologically-sterilized slaves who live in mortal fear of their castrator and slave-master God. Satanists seek to create a paradise on earth, while Christians Jews and Muslims destroy the earth and each other in an attempt to reach a paradise in an afterlife. Anarcho-Satanists seek pleasure and mutual benefit, while Christians Jews and Muslims seek to deny pleasure and deny a common understanding with those who do not share their ideas of God. Anarcho-Satanists work towards trust based on logic and reason instead of holding to blind faith. Anarcho-Satanists find pride within their ascension to more equal and just beings, while Christians Jews and Muslims seek to keep humanity wretched to create a greater contrast to the glory of their God. Anarcho-Satanists trust themselves and their chosen communities, and distrust the dictates of all authorities that seek to justify their authority by divine mandate.

Anarcho-Satanists seek to live in the present… not continuing in the obvious mistakes of our less-evolved ancestors, and not in the delusion of individual consciousness existing beyond death. Anarcho-Satanists believe in mutual self-reliance… not in appeals to the charity of the unjustly rich, and not in profiting from the labors of the unjustly poor.

Anarcho-Satanists strive to become their own gods, and to recognize that same divinity-of-self when it is realized in others. Anarcho-Satanists choose for themselves the reasons and ways to exercise judgment or exercise forgiveness, how and when to show mercy, and how and when to show wrath. Anarcho-Satanists are unafraid to defend themselves, instead of constantly “turning the other cheek” and repeatedly becoming the victims of brutal attacks through God-induced cowardice. Anarcho-Satanists seek universal responsibility and accountability, stemming from our natural inclinations towards creating and maintaining a society based on justice.

Anarcho-Satanists do not abuse children or sacrifice living beings- this is a false accusation of monotheists to divert attention away from their abuse of children, their human sacrifice of soldiers (and civilian ‘collateral damage’) in war, and and the sacrifice of the joys of life they demand so that their believers can come to their deaths with ‘clean souls’ and supposedly enter a heavenly afterlife.

The First Church of Satan was founded on the authority of one man (Anton LaVey), was enshrouded in the occult mysticism of high priests, and was focused on rituals seeking to gratify selfish, short-sighted desires through the “magic” of psychological projection. To provide a serious and strong resistance to monotheism, a new and different approach is necessary.

The First Church of Satan does not proselytize- after LaVey died, leaders of the First Church of Satan sought a low profile to enable Machiavellian scheming from the shadows of obscurity. The Church of Satan Anarchist is willing to proselytize and seeks to bring light upon forbidden taboos by spreading the word of what worshiping Satan really means, which is worshiping yourself, worshiping other people, and worshiping other forms of life on earth. The First Church of Satan holds the view that most of humanity is unfit for inclusion, education and advancement… beyond hope of evolution, and that building a community will only enable persecution. The Church of Satan Anarchist refutes this view, is unafraid of persecution, and seeks to actively disseminate knowledge of a new approach to Satanism for the purpose of building strong and sustainable communities around the worship of life.

The Church of Satan Anarchist encourages individuals to form and practice their own rituals of life-worship, as those individuals are the best judges of what forms of worship best suit them. However, it is suggested that adherents to The Church of Satan Anarchist contemplate an attempt to liberate themselves from the influence of God through the following three actions-

First, the Journey (actively pursuing self-discovery of mental and physical limits through a number of different means, which can include sexual experimentation, body modification, sport and game participation, education, meditation, inebriation, artistic expression, cooperative labor, debate, martial arts, travel, etc.) Second, the Pit (more commonly known as a Mosh Pit or Circle Pit- a wild dance to loud, energetic music, where the dancer’s bodies randomly collide.) Third, the Black Mass (more commonly known as the Black Bloc protest tactic- anonymous individuals wearing all black taking direct action against institutions of injustice- institutions which are often rooted in the false values of monotheism.)

The suggested holidays of The Church of Satan Anarchist are individual birthdays (to be celebrated as the individual sees fit), Halloween (a festival of anonymous liberation and remembrance of the dead), and seasonal equinoxes and solstices (as reminders of life’s patterns and balance). There is no requirement to celebrate these holidays, and no rule to prevent the individual from celebrating other holidays.

The Church of Satan Anarchist considers the human body to be the temple of worship, and rejects the cold marble, stained glass and ill-gotten wealth of monotheists in favor of the grace, strength, diversity and adaptability of our physiques- the result of millions of years of human evolution.

The Church of Satan Anarchist is strongly opposed to racism, sexism, homophobia, and hierarchy. Adherents promote equal treatment for all as the foundation for a just society. The Church of Satan Anarchist is strongly opposed to occult mysticism. Adherents promote open communal joy celebrated through life’s interconnectedness.

The Church of Satan Anarchist has adopted the symbol of the goat’s head within the inverted pentagram overlaid with an anarchy symbol to recognize their role as the scapegoats of the inverted morality prevalent in modern society due to the influence of Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

If you respect the boundaries of people more than you respect the boundaries of property, if you believe in making the world a better place more than you believe in going to heaven or avoiding hell, and if you trust in yourself and other people close to you more than you trust in God, you are already well on your way towards being an Anarcho-Satanist.”

Ordo Serpentis – Luciferism

The Ordo Serpentis, known as Luciferism and Luciferans (not to be confused with Luciferianism and Luciferians), are a sub-group of self-described “traditional Satanists.”

“To gain an understanding of authentic Satanism it is necessary for the individual to be able to disassociate what they may have been taught from confused humanists, misbehaved christians, dabbling cabalistists and a whole host of other false claimants as well as to recognise that much that has been reported in a some what historical fashion has invariably been tainted by those who actually (for many reasons, powr being the most abundant) oppose Satanism.

The covens of the Dark Ages and Middle Ages, prior to being tainted by nobles who sought to both regain control over their serfs as well as to entertain their own questionable tastes for entertainment, were predominantly institutions of rebellion against the established rulers as well as a celebration of life removed from such bonds.

Thus the attending individual would both be armed against his or her oppressors (often through the use of poisons as well as spiritual and magical means) and enjoy a taste of life (albeit in a somewhat clandestine fashion) with the edicts and unjust burdens of such “authorities” removed. In this fashion was the true spirit of Lucifer (known as Satan after the fall) invoked and valued by the participants.

Satanism is not simply a direct opposite response to Judeo-Christian scripture. Those that claim such do not have the understanding of Cathar inversion. (The Cathars would often conduct seemingly orthodox Christian rites but have the true meaning veiled. Those of like nature understood, for example, that when the priest stated “God” it was not, in all actuality, addressing the Judeo-Christian deity. Such were the operations able to be carried out publicly without fear of drawing the wrath of the authorities of the Christian church.) Luciferism invokes and upraises the true spirit of Satan as the archetypical rebel against unjust (and unrightfully assumed) authority while also empowering the individual and celebrating this vital spark of life. Any arguments to the contrary are born either of ignorance or fear, or both.” – Ordo Serpentis, Illumination

Membership is currently closed as the order undergoes “refinement and restructuring.”

“The Ordo Serpentis is currently undergoing a period of refinement and restructuring. When this has reached a satisfactory stage then membership shall be available with the aim of establishing a network of new covens. Until such time those of kindred spirit are encouraged to apply themselves to the study and practice of Liber Serpente and to partake in the Outer Circle rite.” – Ordo Serpentis, Introduction

Luciferianism: Theistic, Arcadic, and Nontheistic

Not all Satanists revere the carnal aspects of Satan. Some revere Him as a bringer of Knowledge, Truth and Light, akin to the Prometheus legend of the Greeks. These people are called Luciferians.

461px-ParadiseLButts1

Lucifer, as depicted in John Milton’s Paradise Lost

Unlike conventional Satanists, many of whom embrace less than virtuous behavior in an attempt to exalt the physical body, Luciferians strive to be beacons of integrity, honesty and wisdom. They seek to become more like Lucifer through left-hand path occultism – Thelema and Kaballah in particular – and therefore, gnosis. They believe Lucifer was wrongly cast from the heavens for blessing humanity with knowledge and have a sympathetic interpretation of the events leading to His legendary fall from grace.

Theistic Luciferians revere Lucifer as an actual deity and offer Him praise through elaborate ceremonial magick. Most are solitary. The Neo-Luciferian Church, founded in 2005 by Danish occultist Bjarne Pedersen and American artist, author and philosopher Michael Paul Bertiaux, maintains an active membership in Denmark and Sweden.

Arcadic Luciferianism, named after the ancient mythological society of Arcadia, marries secular humanism with neo-pagan culture. Though they participate in occult activities, such as revering the sabbaths listed in the Wiccan Wheel of the Year, they consider these activities purely symbolic of human ideals and otherwise distance themselves from magical work. The ambition of Arcadic Luciferians is to return to a state of communion with nature as described in the legend of Arcadia.

Sometimes described as “agnosticism for Luciferians,” the third sub-group within this category are called Nontheistic Luciferians.
