The Elder Sign and its Occult Associations in Arab Magic

“The Elder Sign is sometimes confused with the Pnakotic Pentagram and the swastika-like Sign of the Old Ones.  However, the actual Elder Sign is a symbol which is often compared to a tree or tree-branch, and consists of a central line with three lines branching off to the left and two lines branching off to the right:

This symbol seems to be all but completely unknown to Western occultists.  However, it is easily recognizable as a relatively common symbol in Arabic magical traditions.  It appears to be one of the 28 graphemes attributed to the first century Turkish physician Diagoridos (سوديروقسيد).  The symbol became more popular in Arab occult traditions in the mid-9th century because of its inclusion in the text Shuq al Mastaham Fi Ma’arifat Rumuz al Aqlaam by Ibn Wahshiyya (ةيشحو نبا). Wahshiyya is famous for his contributions to the Arabic grimoire known in the West as Picatrix, which he made via his text Kitab al Falaha al Nabatiyya.  He is likewise famous for his decipherment of many Egyptian heiroglyphics centuries before a similar breakthrough occurred in the West.

Below is a summary of the esoteric associations of the Elder Sign based on the writings of Wahshiyya, and supplemented with additional material, primarily from Ibn ‘Arabi (يبرع نبا).  Hopefully, this might provide some insight into the significance and use of this symbol within Arab magical traditions, and perhaps by extension, the magick of the Cthulhu mythos:

The name of the sign is “Zai” (ياز)
It is a Solar Grapheme [huruf ash-shams (سمشلا فورح)]
Its numeric value is 7 (٧)
It is associated with the 19th lunar mansion [manzil (لزنم)] which is called “The Sting” [ash-shaula (ء(وشلا)]
Its zodiacal sign is Scorpio [burj al ‘aqrab (برقعلا جرب)]
The divine name associated with this sign is “The Living One” [al Hayy (يحلا)]
Terrestrially it is associated with the element Water and celestially it is associated with the element of Air.”

Baphomet as a Composite Symbol

“Baphomet, the Great Architect, the absolute unity, the embodiment of all, is revered by many occult and mystic schools of thought.  Amongst Pagans, Baphomet has been referred to as “the Witch God”, and is the logical result of the union of the God, or primary masculine energy, and Goddess, or primary female.  Baphomet symbolizes the union of all opposing forces in synthesis, without any being neutralized or lost.  Light and dark, male and female, man and animal, positive and negative, all co- exist in Baphomet.  Baphomet symbolizes the act of creation, the first miracle, with opposing forces joining as one resulting in something new, rather than their mutual destruction.  Baphomet has been revered by the Golden Dawn, OTO, the Illuminati, and is rumored to be the secret God of Freemasonry.  Amongst Satanists, Baphomet is also highly honored.  The example of this can be found clearly in their chosen symbol, the “Sigil of Baphomet”.

The Sigil of Baphomet was the symbol chosen by Anton LaVey for his Satanic Bible, and was for a time the symbol of the Church of Satan until they failed to secure its copyright.  The symbol is based upon one found in a French alchemic text, displaying on one side a circle with an upward pointed pentagram and a man within the pentagram with his head, hands, and feet forming the points.  Around the circle are the names “Adam” and “Eve”.  On the other side is the familiar sigil, the goats-head contained within a downward pointed pentagram within a circle.  Around this circle are the names “Sammael” and “Lilith”.  These two symbols represent the higher and lower principles of man, Adam and Eve being the symbols of man in conformity with the will of God, while Sammael and Lilith represent the self-serving urges.    The Sigil of Baphomet removes the names “Sammael” and “Lilith”, and instead replaces them with Hebrew symbols that spell out the word “Leviathan”, refereeing to one of the two great beasts of Hebrew mythology, symbols of the natural forces of the earth and sea.  Given all of this; Sammael, Lilith, Leviathan, why would this symbol be connected to Baphomet?  It is the idea of creating a composite symbol, just as Baphomet is a composite symbol.  By layering one symbol over another,  the power of the symbol is increased.  Other Satanic organizations have taken this association with Baphomet even further, adding to the symbol the “torch of illumination” and the Ouroborus, the serpent eating its own tale.  The torch of illumination symbolizes the Baphometic urge to seek knowledge from within, and the Ouroborus symbolizes self-knowledge through indulgence.

Aleister Crowley also revered Baphomet.  In calling himself “the Beast 666”, he was accepting a subordinate role to this greater force, while also acknowledging the combination represented by Baphomet within himself.  Crowley was a man, but a man accepting the role of the Beast, his opposite, and growing from this acceptance.  Satanist revere Baphomet for similar reasons; Baphomet represents self-awareness and indulgence, and while Satan may be the old Hebrew symbol for these ideas, the one most recognized by our society, Baphomet is a much closer approximation.  The idea of Baphomet in the popular imagination begins with the Knights Templar.   A monastic order founded during the first crusades, this small band of soldiers was charged with occupying the site of the first temple of Jerusalem and protecting travelers to and from the Holy Land.  From a small, poor monastery, the Templars grew into one of the wealthiest military powers in Europe, most likely because along with the occupation of the temple site, they also excavated it, and possibly discovered something of political and religious importance.  Over the time of their existence, the Templars traded in goods and ideas with the east, and from contact with other religions began to re-examine their own.  They had authority outside the Church, with the Grand Master of the order being second only to the Pope, and complete autonomy.  Their discoveries and contact with foreign ideas led them to knew and potential heretical ideas about the nature of reality and of deity.

When King Phillip IV of France and Pope Clement V brought the Templars down in an act to acquire their power and wealth, the Inquisition charged the order with heresy and devil-worship.  Yet it was not Satan that they confessed to revere, but rather Baphomet.  Baphomet may have been the corruption of terms from a number of sources suggesting the search for wisdom, or may have been an actual entity symbolizing the Templars redefinition of deity.  In either case, the destruction of the Templars burned Baphomet into history, even though the destruction of most of their writing left Baphomet also in a mysterious haze for future generations.  Future occult thinkers would discover and explore the idea of Baphomet in greater detail, as with each passing age they would have more freedom to express these ideas.  Baphomet was described as a great psychic force and a cabalistic tool of tremendous power, and as an androgynous being composed of all the elements and none of them at the same time; the prime element from which all others arise.  Baphomet was even described as the light bearer, the role of Apollo, Balder, Lucifer, and others.  Eliphas Levi tried to incorporate these ideas into his now famous image, an intelligent force composed of all things at once, active and passive in all ways.  It is this image that has captured the imaginations of the popular culture, though few grasp its full depth, and write it off as a depiction of the Devil.  Modern explorers of the idea of Baphomet have made the next leap in logic, suggesting that Baphomet is the prime force of the universe, and the universe itself.  Instead of a God that is separate and initiator of creation, Baphomet is creation itself, both the act and the result.  While normally religion and science are opposed schools of thought, in this idea, of Baphomet, they are moving in the same direction.  Albert Einstein theorized about a great unifier, in his mind represented by mathematic formula, just as Aleister Crowely described a great unifier in mystic and magickal terms.  Baphomet has become the nearest human description of this totality.

As this totality of being, Baphomet is amoral, having no guides for right or wrong.  Rather, there is that which is successful in Baphomet, and that which is not.  Baphomet is beyond intellect, being a force, but through us has the intelligence of all.  Thus, in seeking out Baphomet, we need only to look inward, and open ourselves to the possibility of tapping into that totality.  Through Baphomet, we have access to everything, and only need the will and strength of conviction to achieve that which we desire.”

Mark of the Beast

The Mark of the Beast, also called the “number of a man,” is a hypothetical mark espoused by followers of the Second Beast – the Beast of the Sea, aka Leviathan – in the end-times as described by Revelation.

“And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.”
– Revelations 15:2 (KJV)

“And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.
And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
And he had the power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”
– Revelations 13:11-18 (KJV)

The references made in Revelation to the “deadly wound” of the beast are intended to invoke in the Jewish reader’s mind passages from the Old Testament referring to God slaying Leviathan.

“In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.”
– Isaiah 27:1 (KJV)

“There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.
These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season.
That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.
Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.”
– Psalm 104:26-29 (KJV)

A later passage in Revelations associates Leviathan with Satan:

“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years.”
– Revelations 20:1-3, KJV

In Greek manuscripts, the number is written as χ ξ ϛ, ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ, hexakósioi hexēkonta héx, “six hundred and sixty-six.” Thus, the number of the beast is typically interpreted as 666. However, in early versions of the New Testament written on manuscripts dated to 225-275 AD (in the case of Papyrus 115), the number is translated instead as 616.

It is generally understood by Biblical scholars that the number 666 refers to Emperor Nero, whose name translated from Greek to Hebrew has a numeric value of 666. An Aramaic scroll dated to “the second year of Emperor Nero” refers to him by his name and title; in Hebrew it is Nron Qsr (pronounced “Nerōn Kaisar”), and in Latin it is Nro Qsr (pronounced “Nerō Kaisar”).

Regardless, end-times thinkers have applied these passages from Revelation to many people and forms of identification throughout history in an attempt to validate their belief in the iminent apocalypse.

Baphomet and the Knights Templar

“I was paging through the The Sacred Fire: The Story of Sex in Religion and came across an illustration entitled: “Idol” of Knights Templar, showing semitic influences (p 177). There is no reference in the text to the picture and no source given for the illustration. However, if its a genuine drawing from the time of the Inquisition’s investigations into the Templars, it could very well be the source for Eliphas Levi’s goat headed, hermaphroditic version of Baphomet, the mysterious demon the Inquisition accused the Templars of worshiping.

Crescent moon with face in top left corner, sun with face in top right corner. Roundish vase with penis inserted in top, balls showing, in bottom left corner. Same vase with baby emerging, bottom right corner. Bird with outstretched wings in the center of the image. Naked human figure with small wings sitting on top of the bird, its genitals obscured by the bird’s head. The human figure has the head of what looks like a sheep to me — no horns at all. The bottom half is divided into two boxes:

right hand box — A woman with upraised arms, her open robe showing her breasts and a shaved pubic area. On her head is a crown with three rectangular segments. Between her feet is a skull. To the left are six small stars and a large five-pointed star. To the right are six small stars and a large six-pointed star. In each hand she holds what looks like a stiff chain running down the length of her body and angled slightly inward. At the end of each chain is a small crescent shape.

left hand box — Another woman with open robe, upraised arms, three segmented crown, and stiff chains in her hands, angled inwards. No stars or skull.

The Templar Revelation (p 146) cites the fact that Levi in his History of Magic says that the Templars were created by a gnostic Johannite sect that preserved esoteric secrets and had designs on temporal power. Further, Levi says that before his execution Jacques de Molay, the last of the official Templar Grandmasters, ‘organized and instituted Occult Masonry.’

In other words, Levi thought he knew what was going on with the Templars. This gave him license to smush the above imagery together according to his own understanding.

For the sheep’s head he substituted a goat’s head, since the imagery of the top half obviously has a sexual generation theme to it. The wings became bat wings, because this is supposed to be a demon. He then moved up elements from the lower half: The five-pointed star is placed on the goat’s head. The exposed breasts are placed on the naked body of indeterminate sex. The obscured genitals are replaced with the caduceus, which derives from the interweaving of the links in the chain-like instruments held by the open-robed women. Later on, chains are added to the Tarot card of the Devil, based on what look like chains in this original imagery.

So Levi’s iconography says something like Sexuality enslaves men and women but it can be transmuted into a healing force by a proper interweaving of male and female elements. I don’t know whether he was referring to an inner alchemy or to physical, ritual sex. But what does the Templar imagery actually stand for?

Given the crown and the stars, I suspected that the the open robed women were images of the Queen of Heaven, obviously not the Virgin Mary, but an earlier incarnation, perhaps Isis. I had the intuition that the key to understanding was the instrument of interwoven links that she carried in her hands. These were obviously not chains, since they didn’t fall like chains, they were stiff and angled inward. But what were they? They looked vaguely Egyptian to me. I thumbed through a book on Egyptian Mythology, but didn’t find any hieroglyph or sculpture that fit the image.

The answer came while I was again thumbing through The Sacred Fire. On page 44 there is an illustration entitled, ‘From an old Egyptian urn’. On the right it shows a man with a club fighting a lioness. On the left it shows a kneeling man worshiping a cartouche-like oval. Within the oval is a penis and rising above it is an interwoven chain-like object. Outside the oval is another interwoven chain-like object with three sinuous links. The Templar images show objects with eleven and twelve links, but the similarities between the Egyptian and Templar objects are clear.

So, if B. Z. Goldberg, the author of the Sacred Fire, is not doodling away out of his own imagination, it looks very much as if the Templars were secretly into worshiping a naked Queen of Heaven figure with Egyptian roots. And that this worship had something to do with sexual sublimation, an appropriate practice for a band of celibate warrior monks.

In keeping with the Egyptian theme I wondered if the sheep-headed figure was the ba, the soul, the source of life-desiring sexual energy, since sheep’s say bah. Similarly birds say kah, so the bird that carries the naked sheep-headed figure on its back might be the ka. Birds get a panoramic overview when they fly and have very sharp eyesight, hence they are symbols of consciousness and discrimination.

Could the upper image be the fusion of the ba and the ka, sexuality now winged being carried aloft by discriminating consciousness? The body is naked but we can no longer tell its sex. The head of the bird replaces its genitals.”

The Satanic Cross

Not to be confused with the Inverted Cross, the Satanic Cross is a modified version of the alchemical symbol for sulphur, representing fire and brimstone. It is also theorized to be a combination of the Cross of Lorraine, a symbol carried by the Knights Templar into battle on their banners, and the Infinity Symbol, in such a manner as to represent a phallus. Phallic symbols were used by the pagan ancients as a good luck symbol, a sentiment Anton LaVey adopted in The Satanic Rituals — some of which involve the use of a golden phallus for idolatry purposes.

The symbol was placed above LaVey’s Nine Satanic Statements in publications of the Satanic Bible, cementing its reputation as a Satanic symbol.

Sometimes, as depicted below, the Satanic Cross is combined with the Ouroboros symbol.

The Origin of the Name “Baphomet”

“Baphomet” by Derrick Adams

There are several theories concerning the origins of the name of Baphomet. The most common explanation claims that it is an Old French corruption of the name of Mohammed (which was Latin-ized to “Mahomet”) – the Prophet of Islam. During the Crusades, the Knights Templar stayed for during extended periods of time in Middle-Eastern countries where they became acquainted with the teachings of Arabian mysticism. This contact with Eastern civilizations allowed them to bring back to Europe the basics of what would become western occultism, including Gnosticism, alchemy, Kabbalah and Hermetism. The Templars’ affinity with the Muslims led the Church to accuse them of the worship of an idol named Baphomet, so there are some plausible links between Baphomet and Mahomet. However, there are other theories concerning the origins of the name.

Eliphas Levi, the French occultist who drew the famous depiction of Baphomet argued that the name had been derived from Kabbalistic coding:

“The name of the Templar Baphomet, which should be spelt kabalistically backwards, is composed of three abbreviations: Tem. ohp. AB., Templi omnium hominum pacts abbas, “the father of the temple of peace of all men”.

Arkon Daraul, an author and teacher of Sufi tradition and magic argued that Baphomet came from the Arabic word Abu fihama(t), meaning “The Father of Understanding”.

Dr. Hugh Schonfield, whose work on the Dead Sea Scrolls is well-known, developed one of the more interesting theories. Schonfield, who had studied a Jewish cipher called the Atbash cipher, which was used in translating some of the Dead Sea Scrolls, claimed that when one applied the cipher to the word Baphomet, it transposed into the Greek word “Sophia”, which means ” knowledge” and is also synonymous with “goddess”.

Satanic Holidays

Pardon the vitriol evident in the text cited below; the Joy of Satan ministries in particular are highly critical of Christian beliefs and culture. This excerpt, however, explains how (some) theistic Satanists have adapted the Wheel of the Year, revered by Wiccans in the yearly solstices, for their esoteric use:

“Satanic Holidays are based upon the natural cycles. What is known as “Satanism” is humanity’s original religion. The holidays listed below precede Christianity from hundreds to thousands of years. Because the Christian Church could not murder everyone, the original Pagan holidays were taken and Christianized in attempts to convert as many as possible.

The truth behind all of these special dates is that the planets and astral world are aligned a certain way that greatly enhances certain workings, giving them extra power that would not be possible if they were started during other times. Covens of old met regularly during the full moon cycles and during the special dates listed below, as the planetary and astral energies were very powerful at these times of the year. In order to systematically and forcibly remove spiritual knowledge and power from our people, the Christian Church stole these holidays and replaced them with fictitious nonsense. There is a true and a false with nearly everything and one can see the glaring lie of Christianity in that everything in that foul program is and has been stolen from the original religions, and replaced with imposter characters, places, and rites where nothing spiritual is left. Another example is how fundamentalist Christians have been working to destroy the last Pagan/Satanic practices of the Yule Season and Winter Solstice, such as removing Santa Claus, the Yule tree, and other evidence that reveals the true origins of the Yule and replace them soley with the nazarene and ilk. For more information and research, type in Jehova’s Witnesses into any internet search engine such as and add ‘Pagan holidays.’ The information about this is extensive and proves beyond any doubt that these holidays have NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH CHRISTIANITY.

The fictitious nazarene has nothing to do with xmas. Xmas coincides with the Winter Solstice and the Yule season, the shortest day of the year. December 25th is the birthdate of the Persian God Mithra, and the Roman Holiday of Saturnalis. The tree, the decorations, baking, gifts and celebrating have NOTHING to do with the nazarene. These are carry-overs from original Pagan celebrations. The Yule tree is really symbolic of the human soul, with the trunk being representative of the spine, the branches, the 144,000 nadis [pathways of the vril/witchpower/chi], and the lights being symbolic of the nadis all lit up with Satan’s Serpentine Energy. The star on top of the tree is representative of the risen Serpent of Satan.

“Easter” was stolen from Astaroth. Originally known as “Ashtar.” This holiday coincides with the Vernal Equinox of spring when day and night are of equal length. Known as “Eastre” to the Anglo-Saxons. As the Goddess of fertility, she was associated with rabbits and eggs. The Christians stole this holiday and twisted its meaning. Other names include: Easter, Eastre, Eos, Eostre, Ester, Estrus, (Estrus is when an animal goes into heat; mating season) Oestrus, Oistros, and Ostara. Again, the “Lamb of God” was stolen from the Zodiac sign of Aries the Ram which occurs every spring.

“All Saint’s Day” corresponds with “Halloween/Samhain.”
“Assumption Day” coincides with “Lammas Day” of the “Summer Solstice.”

December 22nd-23rd

Although the Solstice begins on the 21st-22nd of December, the 23rd is a very special Personal Day for Father. The Sun enters the sign of the Goat which represents Satan. The Night of December 22nd- the eve of December 23rd is the Highest Satanic Holy Night of the year. (This was dictated from him personally). It is the day after the longest night of the year. Again we look foreward to beginnings, as the days will begin to get longer as the year goes on. This is a time for intense celebration and devotion to Lord Satan. Indulgence, decorating the home, family celebrations and get togethers. The Night of Dec. 22nd should be spent in dedication to Satan. This is an excellent time to focus on planning for the year. If one wishes to make personal resolutions this is a good time to do so.

At the high point of a ritual, personal resolutions can be written on paper and burned. Father Satan is always there to help us in having the strength to carry through with our intentons. After the rite, intense celebrating should take place.

The Yule holidays for Satanists are times of indulgence and taking pleasure in the physical and material aspects of life. Actually, xmas trees and wreaths are Pagan in origin, so there is no reason not to celebrate this holiday with our families. Gift giving, baking, decorating. This is what the TRUE Yule season is about, not that filthy worthless nazarene.
